Snowmobile Safety Course Information

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club is sponsoring two Youth Safety Courses for snowmobile riders this winter. The completion of such a course is required by law for anyone between the ages of 10 and 17 to operate a snowmobile in New York State.  The first course will be held on Dec. 8, with pre-registration required no earlier than Nov. 27. The second course will be held on Jan. 19, 2008 with pre-registration opening no earlier than Jan. 10. Space is limited and preregistration is required. No walk-ins will be accepted. Register by calling instructors Sandy or Ron Nihill at (315) 357-5233. Youths ages 14 through 17 may operate a snowmobile without adult or other supervision if they have completed a snowmobile safety training course recognized by the State of New York. Youth ages 10 through 13 may operate a snowmobile on land where snowmobiling is allowed if they have completed a snowmobile safety training course recognized by the State of New York and are accompanied by (within 500 feet of) a person who is at least 18 years of age. Youths who do not hold this certificate are subject to the same restrictions as children under the age of 14 years.  Children under 10 years old or under age 14 without a safety certificate may operate a snowmobile only on lands owned or leased by their parent or guardian. For additional information on this New York State law or for a course located near you, call the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in Albany at (518) 474- 0446 or visit the website at www.nysparks.com.
